Getting Started with YAWC

This page describes how to check that YAWC Pro has been installed correctly on your Windows PC.

  1. This document has the special YAWC Word template attached to it. You should see a new menu in the Word menu bar, called YAWC. If this menu is not present, the YAWC template is not in the expected location, and you will need to find it and attach it to the file. This is likely to happen if you are running a non-english language edition of MS-Windows. If you can see a YAWC menu, skip the next step.
  2. Choose the Tools>Templates and Add-Ins menu item, and click the Attach button to bring up a file selection dialog box. Find the YAWC installation directory, which is usually C:\Program Files\YAWC in English language editions of Windows. Choose the HTML subdirectory, select the file HTML-en.dot as the template, and check the "Automatically update document styles" box. Close the dialogs, and the YAWC menu should now be present.
  3. Choose YAWC>Edit document information, to ensure that meta-data can be viewed and edited.
  4. Choose YAWC>Export, to ensure that the document can be converted into HTML. A dialog box showing a progress bar and information about the stages of conversion should appear. If it doesn't, then the YAWC plug-in is not in its expected location, and must be found. In this case, skip the following section.
  5. If the Export operation completes correctly, you should be able to view the document gettingstarted.htm using your Web browser. The HTML document will be in the same directory as this Word file, usually C:\Program Files\YAWC\HTML\, or its equivalent on your version of Windows.

Creating a New document

  1. Choose File>New to create a new document. Do not use CTRL-N, as this will simply create a new document based on the Normal template. A dialog box will open, and shortcuts to two YAWC Word templates should be available, called YAWC Web Page and YAWC DocBook Article. If these are not present, the installation program did not correctly identify your default Word templates directory. Cancel the operation, and carry out the following steps to create these shortcuts.
  2. Choose Tools>Options and select the File Locations tab group. A list of file types is displayed. Select the "User templates" item, and click the Modify button to see the full path to that location. Make a note of the path. This is your default Word templates directory.
  3. Start your File Explorer (press the Windows key and E at the same time to start this program). Go to the YAWC installation directory (usually C:\Program Files\YAWC), and go to the HTML subdirectory. Select the HTML-en.dot template file, right-click the mouse, and choose the Create shortcut item. Copy the shortcut, go to your default Word templates directory, and paste it there. You should rename it to YAWC Web Page. Repeat this operation for the DocBook Word template, which is in the YAWC DocBook directory.
  4. In MS-Word, choose File>New again, and the shortcuts should be listed in the dialog box. Select YAWC Web page to start a new document based on this template.
  5. Save the new document as a file somewhere, e.g. c:\temp\.test.doc. Choose YAWC>Export to check that this file can also be converted into HTML.

Finding the YAWC plug-in

  1. Press ALT-F11 to start the Visual Basic Editor. A new window will be opened, and in this window, choose Tools>References A list of available references will be displayed in a dialog box. Scroll to the bottom to find the YAWCCOM reference. The text "MISSING" will probably be displayed before it.
  2. Select the reference by clicking the mouse over it. The location of the reference should be displayed underneath it. Click the "Browse" button to find the real location of the file, usually either system or system32 in the Windows installation directory (C:\Windows\system or C:\Winnt\system32). Select the file and close the dialog boxes, and switch back to the Word window.
  3. Try exporting the document again. If it still doesn't work properly, please send an email to support@yawcpro.com to request assistance. Send details of the operating system you are running, its language edition, the version of MS-Word, and its language edition.
